Great interest in handball in the Würmtal: Especially when women I (former player Isabell Toth in black) or men I play, the home ground of the HSG Würm-Mitte, the Kurt-Huber-Gymnasium in Gräfelfing, is well attended - at least it was before of the corona pandemic.

The HSG Würm-Mitte fears for its existence - but now there is slight hope.

The DJK Würmtal wants to get back into it.

A grant from the community is the sticking point.

Gräfelfing/Planegg – The ambitious handball players from the Würm Valley have made a name for themselves in recent years under the name HSG Würm-Mitte.

The first women's team plays in the third league, the female A youth even in the youth league and made it into the top 16 teams in Germany for the second time in a row.

Continuation of the HSG Würm-Mitte in danger since 2021

In addition, some HSG players have already worn the jersey of the German national team - both in beach handball and in junior teams of classic indoor handball.

Especially in the female sector, the HSG Würm-Mitte has developed into a nationally known figurehead in the Würmtal valley.

But the continued existence of the HSG has been in danger since last year.

Although the athletes continue to operate under the name HSG, i.e. handball game community, that is exactly what they are no longer: As reported, on June 30, 2021 the previous partner club TV Planegg-Krailling withdrew from the game community with TSV Gräfelfing.

Since then, HSG Würm-Mitte has officially been the outsourced handball department of TSV Gräfelfing, which is looking for a new partner.

DJK Würmtal and TSV Gräfelfing - return to cooperation?

In the current season, TSV is solely responsible for the costs.

According to club president Christoph Göbel, this cannot become a permanent condition.

In addition, the HSG, with its numerous teams, urgently needs indoor times in the neighboring municipality of Planegg.

But a solution now seems to be in sight: DJK Würmtal, which left HSG in the 1990s, has been in talks for a few months as a new, old partner.

HSG handball players living in Planegg would become members of the DJK if there was cooperation again.

DJK President Götz: "That would be my heart's desire"

At the annual meeting in October 2021, club president Martin Götz had already announced that the Planegger club would not rule out rejoining the gaming community - even if not all DJK members were enthusiastic about it right away.

The budget will be discussed in February.

The council will then decide whether or not to accept the application.

Götz hopes that a partnership will allow DJK Würmtal to use the halls in the Lochham school campus, which is currently under construction.

"That would be my heart's desire," says Götz, who has a particular eye on the swimming pool.

The DJK President emphasizes that there should not be any additional costs for his club as a result of the cooperation.

Crucial sticking point: Does the municipality of Planegg pay the subsidy?

This is where the municipality of Planegg comes into play, which is currently applying for a special cost subsidy for 2022.

It should be about 10,000 euros.

"If the application is approved, I'm confident that it will work," says Benedikt Waterloo, head of the handball department at TSV Gräfelfing and thus unofficial board member of Würm-Mitte.

Götz explains: "If the community says yes, we'll sit down and look at the contract."

So far, there is no trend from the town hall.

Stefan Schaudig, manager of the municipality of Planegg, announces: "The budget will be discussed in the course of February.

Then the municipal council will decide whether to accept the application or not.”

HSG Würm-Mitte: Decision probably not until March or April

Originally, Waterloo had hoped to close the issue last year.

After all, the HSG has to start planning now for the new season.

But those responsible for both clubs still have to be patient.

Götz predicts that a final decision could be made in March or April.

At the moment the thumb points slightly diagonally upwards.

First of all, it is only about a decision for the year 2022. In order to be able to plan long-term, however, both clubs would also have to know whether an annual special subsidy can be expected in the future.

So there are still a few open questions.

Basically, however, Götz believes that after a decade-long break, there could be something again with a collaboration between TSV Gräfelfing and DJK Würmtal: "At the moment, the thumb is pointing slightly upwards."
