Many are critical of the World Cup in Qatar.

Not so Thomas Helmer - the ex-professional surprises with his own opinion.

Munich – FIFA President Gianni Infantino* recently caused a new stir about the 2022 World Cup in Qatar*.

Research by various media revealed that several thousand workers lost their lives during the construction of the World Cup stadiums.

But Infantino doesn't want to know anything about it.

"It's just not true," the Swiss defended the event in the emirate.

"It's three.

Three workers have died.

That's still too much, but there's a big difference between three and 6,500." He also made heads shake with an almost absurd comparison: "The working conditions in Qatar are comparable to those in Europe."

The FIFA President recently moved to Doha with his family - that also fueled criticism of himself and the world association.

Prominent voices from the sports world have long been criticizing the award of the World Cup*.

Former Manchester United star Eric Cantona announced that he would not be following the World Cup.

"It's not a real World Cup.

I am not interested in it."

The French justifies his criticism with the numerous human rights violations in the desert state.

Ex-national player Toni Kroos described the award as "wrong" and also denounced the situation in the country.

Thomas Helmer* forms a counterpoint.

The ex-Bayern professional reported on social media with surprising statements about the World Cup.

World Cup 2022 in Qatar: Thomas Helmer can hardly wait - "I'm looking forward to it"

“Just under ten months until the World Cup in Qatar.

I'm really looking forward to it and I'm already saying that I won't take part in political discussions about the World Cup," he wrote in an Instagram message.

"For me, this is simply about the most beautiful sport in the world."

Headwinds are brewing quickly in the comments.

Most of his fans have no understanding of the statements made by the long-time Doppelpass moderator.

"15,000 dead, it doesn't matter, let's play now," is an ironic comment.

"A pretty embarrassing statement," says a user who received a lot of approval for his comment.

Helmer himself, on the other hand, actually receives little approval from his followers.
