More than a month after her accident in Spain, Dutch cycling champion Amy Pieters is still unconscious and in an artificial coma.

Her Team SD Worx team said she suffered severe brain damage.

"She was treated in a Dutch hospital for several weeks after her fall, while training in Spain just before Christmas," her team said in a statement.

“There are still few changes to report on the situation, experienced as uncertain by the family”, added the team, indicating that “the cyclist is breathing without assistance, but is currently not conscious”.

At the end of December, Amy Pieters (30) had been operated on for head injuries and placed in a coma in hospital in Alicante (Spain).

The cyclist fell heavily during training near Calpe, following a collision between team members.

It was on January 6 that the track specialist was transferred to a hospital in the Netherlands, in an intensive care unit.

Amy Pieters has notably been world champion in American racing, three times in a row (2019, 2020, 2021) with her compatriot Kirsten Wild.

In 2019, she was titled at the European Road Championships.

“Currently, some improvement can be seen.

But what happens next is still unpredictable.

After her hospitalization, if her physical state of health is stable, Amy Pieters will have to undergo a long period of rehabilitation”, continues her team, before concluding: “This situation is, for Amy and her family, a difficult period emotionally and uncertain.

The family would like to thank everyone for their support.
