"Better that way, before Taufkirchen drowns"

The flooding in Hilpolding on August 30 last year was nothing new for Franz Schlossnikl.

Actually.

Floods are common there, but this time it was particularly bad.

The president of the BSG Taufkirchen tells the local newspaper which problems had to be overcome - and still are.

Mr. Schlossnikl, how is the BSG doing after the flood in August?

We got through it well because we reacted quickly.

As an immediate measure, we removed the mud that was washed into the stadium while it was still wet.

The lawn must not be damaged.

There we had to flush out the mud with water or help with brooms and water.

A residual amount of two to three centimeters remained in the lawn below the blade length, but that wasn't so tragic, the lawn coped well with it.

When did the cleanup work begin?

We started the very next day.

A total of 20 people helped out over three days.

Within this time everything was promoted again so far.

Only at the parking lots next to the creek along the soccer field is there still some mud left.

It's pebbled up.

The community wanted to go there again as soon as time permitted.

Although that's not particularly annoying.

Which fields had to be cleared of mud?

First and foremost the main pitch in the stadium.

The access road to the clubhouse was also muddy.

We flushed that out completely with borrowed fire hoses.

The training pitches on the opposite side of the flood channel were also affected, but we left the mud in there because it wasn't that deep here.

The lawn was not completely covered, it still got air there and was still able to grow.

It is essential that the lawn does not die under the mud.

There was mainly a lot of washed up material in there, garbage bags, all residual waste up to old and driftwood.

We carried it out by hand or drove it out with wheelbarrows.

The worst thing on these training grounds was that the ball safety net, which lay parallel on the creek side, was torn down.

Did it cause serious damage?

A handrail was bent over and the damage was between 200 and 300 euros.

We repaired it so that it works again.

We'll fix it up properly in the summer.

There was no other damage, such as to the clubhouse.

If the level had been 50 centimeters higher, the water would have run into the clubhouse.

Who did the work?

We could use our own manpower.

All members of the association immediately volunteered to help.

The old gentlemen have moved in completely and have eliminated flood damage instead of a training session.

The boys were busy training and playing.

But some of them were also there to help.

Was gameplay affected?

We were lucky that we didn't have to play at home with the first and second.

Thank God the youth games weren't running yet because it was vacation time.

It actually didn't affect or endanger game operations at all.

The training, on the other hand, does.

One or the other training had to be cancelled.

And 14 days later, the weather cooperated again and there was hardly anything to see.

How high was the water?

It was the highest level I've ever known.

For me it felt like the tenth flood in 30 years.

Has the BSG taken flood protection measures?

We once had the suggestion that we build a wall on the side of the stream, but that was rejected by the water management office because otherwise the water would flow in the direction of the clinic, and then some of the residents would be affected.

That would be worse than a flooded soccer field.

We have a large driveway gate and chicken wire.

We'd have to seal everything up to keep mud out.

But that's difficult.

If everything were sealed off and water got in anyway, it might not come out so quickly either,

Their problem is that the BSG stadium is virtually surrounded by water.

The water comes from three sides: from the Vils, which goes around the clubhouse and continues towards Hilpolding.

But it almost never overflows.

And from the flood channel that leads to the folk festival.

Everything is guided and controlled via the weir on the flood canal (bridge to the kbo clinic, editor).

Of course they have to open the weir.

Better that way, before Taufkirchen drowns, I'd say.

Then, in an emergency, the water will flood our football pitches.

The Aspis site in the immediate vicinity has never been hit.

When everything is under water and only the gangs are looking out, that looks nice, like a big bathing lake.

If it were to happen in winter and everything freezes, we could skate there (grins).
