Daniil Medvedev is in the final of the Australian Open.
The Russian defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 7: 6 (7: 5), 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1 and meets Rafael Nadal in the final on Sunday.
But it was above all an outburst by the winner that caused a stir.
Medvedev verbally abused the referee in the second set.
At the break, when the score was 4-5, from his point of view, Medvedev addressed the chair umpire from the bench and asked him, "Are you crazy?"
During the conversation, Medvedev grew louder and shouted at Jaume Campistol for more than a minute.
"His father speaks on every point," Medvedev yelled repeatedly, and "Are you stupid?
You have to warn him!
Look at me, I'm talking to you«.
Medvedev also said to the referee: If he doesn't warn Tsitsipas, he's "a, how should I put it, a little cat" - obviously a paraphrase of the insult "pussy".
The background to the outbreak was that Tsitsipas' father in the stands apparently interrupted several times with heckling.
In addition, after his re-break to 4: 4, Medvedev lost the service game to 4: 5.
After the rude words, the referee positioned himself near the Tsitsipas box to prevent the father's alleged coaching.
"Big mistake"
Tsitsipas was warned in the fourth set.
He had already been penalized for coaching during the tournament.
In the past, he himself had asked for support from the stands to be allowed.
“I don't think bad emotions help me.
When I do that, I often lose.
After I did it, I thought it's a big mistake," Medvedev said after the match.
