Can the German ice hockey team surprise at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing?

Here you can find all information about the Olympic tournament and the DEB team.

Munich - In 2018, the German ice hockey team sparked a real hype in Germany.

At the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, the DEB men played their way to the silver medal in the final.

In the previous round, top favorite Canada was beaten 4:3.

It is not a prerequisite that the success at the 2022 Olympics will be repeated.

The current corona situation in particular is causing difficulties in naming squads.

The US league NHL has long since announced that it does not want to send any players to the Olympics in order to be able to keep the situation of the infected players under control.

The environment is also tense in the DEL, the German ice hockey league.

Four teams were recently unready to play.

Due to possible infections, national coach Toni Söderholm has to be flexible.

"I'm pleased about the many positive reactions in the personal discussions on the nomination for the provisional squad.

This shows that the players definitely want to be part of the Olympic ice hockey tournament," said the coach at

, showing that the motivation in the team before the games is again very high.

It remains to be seen whether a medal will be won again.

Ice hockey at the 2022 Olympics: These are the halls where games will be played

Most of the games will be played at Beijing's National Indoor Stadium.

The hall holds 18,000 spectators and cost around 65 million euros.

The hall was already used for the 2008 Summer Olympics, where handball, gymnastics and trampolining took place, among other things.

All other matches taking place at the same time as those in the National Indoor Stadium will be played in the Wukesong Arena.

The hall also holds 18,000 spectators and was used for basketball games in 2008.

The DEB submitted the provisional 35-man squad to the DOSB.

The exact names are not to be given yet, according to DEB sports director Christian Künast: “Due to the pandemic situation, we decided not to publicly announce the final squad until the end of January.

It's important to us that the players can go about their duties in the clubs in peace for as long as possible.

That's why we are in an open, constructive exchange with all players and have agreed on the procedure.

We are prepared for all scenarios.”

The 25 players for the Olympics are only announced shortly before departure.
