First local winner since '78: Ashley Barty picked up the Australian Championship Israel today

Tennis player Ashley Barty won the Australian Open today (Saturday), after beating American Daniel Collins 3: 6, 6: 7 (2).

Barty thus finished in the form of a 44-year wait for a home champion and won the third Grand Slam title of her career.

The world number one reached her first ever final game at Melbourne Park, losing just 21 games in the last two weeks, and did not even give her rival a slim chance to win the title and become the first local since the 1978 Australian O'Connor to win the Australian Championship.

Thus Barty, who won the 2019 French Open and is the reigning Wimbledon champion, has counted her third Grand Slam trophy, having been unbeaten since the start of the year and has already counted 11 consecutive games without a loss.

This is after she took the Adelaide tournament in early January.

Collins, who continued the American women's run in the finals at Melbourne Park after Jennifer Brady last year and Sophia Kennin in 2020, will settle for promotion to the top 10 in the new world rankings to be announced on Monday, and will try to get her first trophy in the following tournaments.
