Senegal yesterday declared a national holiday to celebrate the team's historic victory in the African Championship for the first time in its history.

At the end of the penalty shootout victory over Egypt, hundreds of thousands of fans took to the streets in the capital Dakar and other cities, waving state flags and celebrating all night.

"We did not raise our hands at any stage," said coach Sisa, who as a player lost in the 2002 final and as coach in the 2019 final.

The Outstanding Goalkeeper Award was won by Edouard Mandy, the goalkeeper of Senegal and Chelsea, who was also the one who led the celebrations of the players in the locker room.

On the losing side, Muhammad Salah has drawn the most criticism for not even kicking Pendel in a duel because he chose to be the fifth kicker.

"That's why the best kicker should not be fifth," Jamie Krager wrote, "it's just crazy he did not kick Pendel in the African Championship final."
