Britain and Ireland today announced plans to bid to host the 2028 European Football Championship in place of the 2030 World Cup.
The football associations of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland issued a joint statement today saying Britain and Ireland had announced plans to bid to host the 2028 European Football Championship instead of hosting the popular game's World Cup in 2030.
The statement said that hosting the European Finals would provide more economic benefit to the hosts and would cost less, adding, "We believe that the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland can offer UEFA and European football something special and a great experience."
Euro 2020 was held in several cities across the continent last year, while the tournament version will be held in 2024 in Germany.
