Hardly any performance was as expected as that of Eileen Gu.
The ski freestyler is the poster girl of the Chinese Olympic campaign, which is why IOC boss Thomas Bach came to the competition.
And Gu exceeded expectations.
The Japanese superstar, Yuzuru Hanyu, in figure skating, on the other hand, has already lost all chances of gold in the short program.
This is day three of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
That was important
Eileen Gu
is the star of the Chinese Olympic team, and posters used her likeness to advertise the games in her own country.
And now she has her gold medal: The
18-year-old, who was born in San Francisco, won
the freestyle big air ahead of
Tess Ledeux
, who had been the leader until then .
Ledeux, who has dominated in recent years, broke down in tears over missing out on the Olympics and was comforted by Gu.
Incidentally, under the eyes of tennis player
Peng Shuai
, who is the subject of a scandal due to allegations of abuse.
Peng was present, as was Bach, but did not want to answer any questions.
The men's Super-G
was also about gold, silver and bronze
.
After the wind had disturbed the alpine competitions at the weekend, the second day in a row could be ridden without any problems.
There was a well-known winner: The Austrian
Matthias Mayer
already won the Olympic Super-G in Pyeongchang in 2018 - and now, even though he almost fell out of the starting gate.
There was a surprise in
the
men's short program in
figure skating
: the Japanese superstar and double Olympic champion
Yuzuru Hanyu
gambled away his chances for gold with a "refusal" jump, and Hanyu did not come off the ice with a quadruple Salchow.
"I felt good, but felt a hole in the ice on my first jump," he said.
His big competitor, the American
Nathan Chen
, surpassed it and set a world record with 113.97 points.
The freestyle takes place on Thursday.
That's going to be important
Further decisions will be made on Tuesday, and the chances of the German athletes are not bad: In the
parallel trickle slalom in snowboarding
, the women around
Ramona Hofmeister
are hoping for a medal, as is
Stefan Baumeister
for the men (from 7.05 a.m.).
You can read all the important news of the day from Beijing in the Olympic update.
After Denise Herrmann's Olympic victory, the German
biathlon men
are also hoping for a medal in the
individual
event (9.30 a.m.).
There are also decisions in
cross-country skiing
in the
freestyle sprints
for women and men (11.30 a.m.) and in
speed skating
for men
over 1500 meters
(11.30 a.m.).
In the final of the
mixed doubles in curling ,
Italy and Norway
will meet
from 1:05 p.m.
The
tobogganist Natalie Geisenberger
has the best chance of a German gold medal on Tuesday .
The 34-year-old is facing the last two runs in
one
before her third Olympic victory in a row.
The third and penultimate round starts at 12.50 p.m.
