Germany’s ice hockey team starts with Mathias Niederberger in goal against Canada in the Olympic tournament in Beijing.
It is the first Olympic game ever for the keeper from champion Eisbären Berlin.
National coach Toni Söderholm, on the other hand, will, as expected, do without Danny aus den Birken from EHC Red Bull Munich, who was in the German goal when they won the silver medal in 2018.
Substitute keeper against the nine-time Olympic champion is Felix Brückmann from the Adler Mannheim.
Söderholm also only plays with seven defenders and 13 attackers.
In addition to the Birken, defender Dominik Bittner from the Grizzlys Wolfsburg and the Mannheim attacker Nicolas Krämmer are not yet involved in the first tournament game.
