PSG: the payroll has exploded this season

But how far will he go?

According to information from the Team, PSG should increase its annual payroll to €629 million, a record sum never reached by a French club.

With this amount, PSG would thus post an increase of €126m compared to last year when it declared €503m.

The Parisian club corrects the figure announced by the team by reducing it to 585 M€.

Despite everything, since the 2018-2019 season, the sums have continued to increase in proportions which seem endless (370 M € in 2018-2019, 414 M € in 2019-2020, 503 M € in 2020-2021 and therefore 629 million in 2021-2022).

On the scale of the 20 Ligue 1 clubs, which declare a total amount of 1.73 billion euros, PSG represents almost 40% of what clubs spend on salaries (37% exactly).

To explain such a surge in salaries and charges (out of the €629m forecast, €136m are charges and according to PSG estimates of the €585m include €127m in charges), several reasons can be put forward.

First, the XXL recruitment of PSG during the last off-season with the arrivals of Lionel Messi or Sergio Ramos to name a few.

PSG has a rich workforce quantitatively but also in terms of high salaries and has experienced few departures.

PSG should end the season with such record losses of 200 M € due to the health context but also to the lifestyle of the club.

As required by the DNCG (National Management Control Department), the shareholder will certainly have to put his hand in his pocket to plug the hole.

This will not be a problem for QSI, used to taking out the checkbook in case of problems.

If on the national level, the PSG has nothing to fear, it will not be the same thing on the European scene.

Even if UEFA has relaxed the rules of financial fair play.

It is still forbidden to have a deficit of more than €30 million over three financial years.

Obviously, the health crisis has reshuffled the cards and UEFA could be more conciliatory.

Especially since a reform of financial fair play is in the pipeline with two major axes, the salary cap and the luxury cap.

Already practiced in American sports, the luxury cap consists of paying other clubs a financial penalty in the event of exceeding a threshold of its payroll.
