A man was shot dead on Saturday in incidents that erupted in Sao Paulo after the Club World Cup final lost in Abu Dhabi by local club Palmeiras against Chelsea (2-1), according to authorities.

This 35-year-old man, hit by a bullet in the chest, succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

"Fights between supporters were reported in several points, this triggered a crush and a man was shot," a source from the public security department of Sao Paulo state told AFP.

Mounted police disperse the crowd

"A man was arrested in flagrante delicto" after the murder, the source added.

Thousands of Palmeiras supporters, including families with their children, had gathered in the afternoon near their team's usual stadium, in the west of the Brazilian megalopolis, to follow the match from a distance, according to a AFP journalist.

While the outcome of the match was uncertain in the United Arab Emirates, where Chelsea ended up winning with a penalty in extra time, the atmosphere degenerated in Sao Paulo.

Mounted police dispersed the crowd amid throwing stones and objects of all kinds.
