German cross-country skiers Katharina Hennig and Victoria Carl sensationally won the gold medal in the Olympic team sprint competition.
The 25-year-old Hennig and the one-year-older Carl prevailed in the final in Zhangjiakou, China, ahead of the pairs from Sweden and Russia.
The decision was made in the last meters.
Carl of all people ensured the victory.
The 26-year-old had replaced Katherine Sauerbrey, who was scheduled to play alongside Hennig, at short notice.
The starting runner of the German silver relay did not feel 100 percent fit after the stress of the past few days.
In 2010 in Vancouver, Evi Dingebacher-Stehle and Claudia Nystad won the team sprint and thus celebrated the last German Olympic victory in cross-country skiing to date.
