Thanks to its top scorer, 1. FC Köln kept up with the European Cup places.
The goal from the French substitute (84th minute) in the 1-0 (0-0) win over Eintracht Frankfurt took FC to fifth place in the Bundesliga with 35 points.
Coach Steffen Baumgart's team is only two points behind TSG Hoffenheim in fourth place.
This place would mean participation in the Champions League.
Baumgart had initially dispensed with Modeste.
The 33-year-old was last absent due to a corona infection and only returned to team training on Thursday.
With his 15th goal of the season, Modeste ensured victory in what was, however, a weak Bundesliga game.
Frankfurt is in tenth place with 31 points.
Modeste has scored more than 40 percent of all goals in Cologne
Modeste is the guarantee of victory for FC.
The last Cologne success without a goal by the attacker was almost three months ago (a 4-1 win against Mönchengladbach at the end of November).
Modeste has scored more than 40 percent of all FC goals this season (35).
Hardly any club in the Bundesliga is so dependent on a single striker.
A week after the 3-1 defeat against Leipzig, Cologne started more actively.
Although Frankfurt had the first opportunity through Sebastian Rode (9th minute).
But FC were more dangerous in the first half: Dejan Ljubicic missed in the penalty area (17'), Sebastian Anderssson, who started for Modeste up front, failed from a tight angle (25').
Salih Özcan missed Cologne's best chance with a header after a corner (26').
In the second half, Cologne was better, but was not necessarily in front of the Frankfurt goal.
It got loud in the 10,000-strong Cologne Arena when FC coach Baumgart brought on Modeste in the 61st minute.
But it was not until the 84th minute that Modeste appeared alone in front of Kevin Trapp in the Frankfurter Tor.
And he sure converted to victory.
