The German pair skaters Minerva Hase and Nolan Seegert experienced sporting drama in the Olympic freestyle in Beijing.

Beijing - After several falls and broken lifts, the Berlin duo fell back to 16th and last place with 149.69 points.

The 29-year-old Seegert felt the long-term effects of his ten-day corona quarantine and was neither physically nor mentally able to lead his partner across the ice as usual.

"At some point it just couldn't go any further.

It was difficult," said Seegert, who was the first German athlete to be banished to a quarantine hotel in China after a positive corona test.

"We fought until the end, but then at some point the battery ran out," complained Hase.

"It's not the best if you arrive in top form and then your partner has to go into quarantine."

The Olympic champions were the Chinese Sui Wenjing/Han Cong, who were pushed into second place in Pyeongchang in 2018 by the German couple Aljona Savchenko/Bruno Massot with their "freestyle of the century".

The host duo got 239.88 points.

Silver was won by the Vice European Champion Evgenija Tarasova/Vladimir Morosow from Russia with 239.25 points.

World champions Anastasiya Mishina/Alexander Galliamov from Russia came in bronze with 237.71 points.

The pair skating disaster was the negative highlight for the German figure skaters, who were far from the best in the world.

The German champion Nicole Schott was 17th, in ice dancing Katharina Müller/Tim Dieck missed the freestyle final and ended up in 21st place.

Berlin's Paul Fentz did not qualify for the individual and finished ninth in the team competition and last in the short program.
