Erding/Ritten

– Have you ever shot a curling stone over 100 meters?

Felix Karpfinger even got over it four times last Friday.

But he is also a specialist, more precisely one of the six best U19 long-distance shooters in Europe, who crowned their European champion in Renon (South Tyrol).

After 83.98 meters in the first attempt, it was only 122.31, then 110.05 and 124.61 meters before Karpfinger chased his stick 125.14 meters over the track.

The 17-year-old stayed in sixth place, which he had already achieved in qualifying during the team competition.

The outstanding Andreas Knaus (146.78 m) landed at the top.

He would have won the title with four of his five attempts.

His compatriots Sebastian Sommerer (140.80) and Marcel Progsch (140.50) were also on the podium.

Karpfinger's teammates Johannes Michl (130.54) and Maximilian Mayer (128.28) also finished ahead of him.

Nevertheless, Karpfinger was more satisfied with his competition than with the team competition, which finally brought him silver at the European Championships and a large station in the Stockschützenhalle of SC Oberhummel, his home club.

The head of division, Thomas Schöpf, was delighted: "A great success for our stock shooter department.

We've never had anything like that.

We are very proud of our two boys”, because with Karpfinger his club colleague Maxi Kloiber had also become Vice European Champion.

His father and home trainer added: "The success of the two is a figurehead for the entire Eisschützenkreis Freising-Erding district.

You can tell that the youth work is bearing fruit, and it's impressive when the two come back as runners-up in Europe.

That is something that no one can take away from them.

They can tell that to their grandchildren.”

Karpfinger remained modest as ever even in the moment of triumph.

After his return from South Tyrol we spoke to him.

Mr. Karpfinger, how do you rate your competition in the final?

That went relatively well.

I was much happier than in the preliminary round.

I just didn't get into the tournament properly.

In the end, one shot saved me and brought me to the individual final of the top six.

But in the final, I can't complain.

I'm happy I was there at all.

It might have been a bit more, but it just didn't go that way.

My goal was actually fourth place.

A final like this always means learning from the best.

What can you learn from the winner?

You can learn something from everyone, but then you have to be able to implement it.

And I will work towards that.

The Austrians have made a big step compared to last year - we haven't.

But we will try to fight our way back to get the team classification next year.

After a week in Ritten - what is your conclusion at the EM?

Check it out and move on.

The next tournaments are coming soon anyway.

But now I'm glad to be back home with my family.

I haven't seen her in a week now.

How's the sport going now?

Will the stick come into the corner first?

No, he doesn't get in the corner.

I will continue to train because the next tournaments are coming up in April.

You are also an avid soccer player: is SV Hörlkofen kicking off now?

I'm still a bit bruised - in my arm and foot.

I have to cure that first.

Let's see how that develops.

Dieter Priglmeir conducted the interview.
