Tennis star Novak Djokovic has lost the top position in the world rankings to Daniil Medvedev after 361 weeks.
The Serb surprisingly lost 4: 6, 6: 7 (4: 7) to the Czech qualifier Jiri Vesely in the quarterfinals of the ATP tournament in Dubai on Thursday.
This makes Medvedev only the third Russian to take the lead in the ranking.
In addition to US Open champion Medvedev, who is in the round of eight at the parallel tournament in Acapulco, only the Russians Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin managed to make it to the top of the world.
For 20-time Grand Slam winner Djoković, it was the first tournament since his noisy expulsion from Australia earlier this year.
The 34-year-old was allowed to open in Dubai because the authorities there do not require a vaccination certificate for entry.
