Top 14: Montpellier outclasses Stade Français and consolidates its second place

2022-02-27T19:53:59.677Z

Montpellier regained second place, temporarily abandoned by Lyon, by winning (30-3) with the offensive bonus on Sunday at home against Stade Français, hampered in its recovery, during the 19th day of the Top 14.

Philippe Saint-André's team, with two matches behind (against Toulon and Toulouse), has a two-point lead over LOU, and is level with the leader, Bordeaux-Bègles, who are moving to close this day among the Toulouse, very diminished.

Everything is rolling for the Hérault machine.

The MHR, which has not lost in the Top 14 since October 16 and its misstep at home in front of Clermont (22-20), stretches its invincibility to chain a ninth victory in ten matches.

The Montpellier, transfigured since the arrival at the controls of Saint-André, once again forced the decision by relying on their power and their intractable defense.

Stade Français (eighth), which had just won five times in seven days, is hampered in its rise in the standings, but is only four points behind La Rochelle, sixth.

Two yellow cards for Paris

Gonzalo Quesada's team, too undisciplined with the two yellow cards of Ryan Chapuis (24th) and Moses Alo-Emile (58th), wasted too many chances to claim better than a zero point.

Montpellier had an excellent start to the match to widen a gap of thirteen points thanks to a try scored by their third line center English Zach Mercer, after a splendid counter (18th).

The turning point of the meeting took place shortly after the resumption.

For having put a foot in touch, the Parisian winger Adrien Lapègue (44th) was refused a try likely to revive Paris.

Three minutes later, the third line Alexandre Bécognée, full of trickery, scored a second try and gave the MHR some air.

Six minutes from time, winger Gabriel Ngandebe offered the attacking bonus to the indomitable MHR.
