Harbasio Defer, 41, who won two gold and one silver medal at the Olympics, admitted to being addicted to alcohol.

Defer, whose parents emigrated from Argentina to Spain due to the dictatorship in Argentina, said he suffered throughout his childhood from derogatory names and especially from the nickname "Sudaka".

"I did not understand why I was called that just because my parents were from Argentina," Defer said, "and why they would tell me to go back there. I did not understand it, but my family's love kept me on track. I still do not remember how I fell asleep the night before the Athens competition, "I won it. I remember failing the ground competition and then I said, 'Damn, I'm going to drink.'

On life and difficult times he said: "I woke up in the morning lying on the street with blood around me and I do not know what happened."

Defer recounted: "From a young age I was very sensitive and gentle. If someone called me stupid, tears would straight up in my eyes. At home I would get kisses, connections and affection, I felt protected, but outside everything was different."

He went on to talk about the experience at the rehab center and said: "I spent ten months at this center and saw more people coming back because of problems than people who recovered. They told me I was addicted and it's for life. When I left the institution they told me not to drink more To test myself. I'm like that, competitive. I do not want anyone to tell me I can not handle anything.

"I always drank to distract myself from problems and block emotions. At some point I got to the point that if I drank one beer, it's already over with 20. One day after weaning I went to a friend and instead of coffee I asked for a beer. I drank one beer and then I went home and everything was fine. I I don't need alcohol anymore. I first got drunk when I was 18. Suddenly there was a day when I said I would drink a drink or two, and suddenly it came in large quantities and my parents had to take me. I spent 20 years with alcohol. When I practiced I would go out on weekends, we would go out to celebrate "End of competitions. When I retired, all I had left was alcohol. I entered an endless circle."

The Spaniard went on to say of his daily routine: "You just wake up at 11am and instead of drinking coffee, you drink beer and you don't stop drinking until late at night. You end up going crazy. You are poisoned and you lose your vitality."

When he was 20 he was denied a silver medal at the World Championships after smoking a joint: "It was a youthful mistake. Then I was not caught again. After I retired I used other substances, but everything always came from alcohol. Always when I was drunk and finished then someone would come and tell me to take "Something then I can get up and recover. I could not stop with the alcohol. I realized I could not drink alcohol so I drank beer, but liters upon liters."

Defer recounted suicidal thoughts that went through his mind: "I thought about it twice, but in both cases I quickly decided not to do it. I have always been a warrior, I do not give up. I could not do such a thing to my family.
