Will Maccabi Tel Aviv take advantage of the complicated situation created in European basketball following the war in Ukraine in order to make an impressive move?
"Israel Today" has learned for the first time that if Xavi Pasqual leaves Zenit St. Petersburg due to the situation and the growing boycott of Russia, the Yellows will try to join him.
Maccabi has a sweeping decision to bring in a senior European coach this summer, and Pasquale is highly regarded among the club's heads.
Already a few years ago the Yellows met with the Spanish coach, but the negotiations did not succeed due to his professional demands.
Pasquale, 49, won the 2010 Euroleague championship with Barcelona and has worked very successfully as head coach of the Spanish club for eight years.
He was then appointed coach of Panathinaikos where he worked for two years and won two local championships, and in 2019 was appointed coach of Zenit St Petersburg which he has been leading for the past two years.
Last summer Pasqual signed a new three-year contract at the Russian club for a high salary, but if he takes a similar step to many foreign players and coaches who left Russia last week, the Yellows may contact him now and sign a long-term contract.
