The Austrian team renews the world champion until 2028, the longest contract in the history of Formula 1 | The championship closes the doors to Russia, where it will not return in the future

Just three months after that tremendous race in Abu Dhabi, in which Red Bull and Max Verstappen cut short the hegemony that Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton had imposed, the red buffalo team and its wonder boy have sworn eternal love.

Red Bull announced this Thursday the renewal of Verstappen until 2028 after articulating the longest contract ever signed in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship. According to the information that the newspaper De Telegraaf advanced on Wednesday, the agreement will also be one of the longest generous, since, according to the Dutch publication, very close to the circle of Mad Max, the current world champion will pocket an amount that will be around 50 million euros annually.

“Choosing to stay at Red Bull until 2028 was an easy decision.

I love this team and what happened last season was simply incredible”, declares Verstappen in the official statement referring to the great course played in 2021 –ten wins, 18 podiums and ten pole positions in 22 grands prix–, in which he fought a knife duel with Hamilton, who ultimately fell to his side in a last act that will forever go down in the books.

“Since I arrived in 2016 – in 2015 he made his debut at Toro Rosso – we have set ourselves the goal of reaching the title and we have already achieved it, so now it is time to keep that number one in the car as long as possible”, adds the rider, Until now, it had entered about 30 million annually.

“Verstappen has driven one step ahead of everyone”

Red Bull has a driver and also a car, and it would be strange not to see them fight together to retain the title in 2022, an exercise in which a new framework enters the scene at a technical level, especially around the aerodynamic component of the cars.

In this sense, it is worth highlighting the role that Honda, the engine supplier, has played in the aspirations of the team from Milton Keynes (Great Britain) and Verstappen, who at one point hinted at the possibility of a change of scene in case of not being able to drive a single-seater that would not allow him to show his full potential.

"This renewal is a clear statement of intent, which shows the confidence that both parties have in each other," argues Christian Horner, the director of Red Bull.

"The first motivation [of the new contract] is to retain the championship title that Max won, but at the same time it is also a reflection of the long-term planning we have done," concludes the executive.

Formula 1 vetoes Russia

Shortly after Verstappen's renewal became official, Liberty Media, the organizing company of the world motorsports championship, issued a statement of scope: "Formula 1 confirms that it has terminated its contract with the promoter of the Russian Grand Prix, which means that no race will be held there in the future.”

Just six days ago Formula 1 already warned of the cancellation of the race weekend scheduled for this year in the country for September 25.

Overcoming the caution of the initial days, Liberty Media definitively breaks with the grand prize and vetoes Russia in its World Cup.
