SC Freising's volleyball players are withdrawing from league games this season and going down to the Bavarian league.

Freising

– That was it with the regional league.

Because of the corona pandemic, the volleyball players at SC Freising have canceled numerous games and are no longer able to make up for them all in the given time frame.

The consequence: The Freisingers have withdrawn from league games and will start next season in the Bayernliga.

There were various reasons why the people of Domstadt had repeatedly canceled their games in the past few months: the fact that an SCF player was infected with Corona at the beginning of the 2020/21 season and the entire team had to be in quarantine for two weeks was one of the reasons for the the current decision, said the trainer and sporting director of the sports club, Falk Ullmann.

Many actors have therefore exercised caution to this day, Ullmann continued.

In addition, one has to consider that some older players are now in management positions professionally and do not want to afford to get infected with the virus in a league game.

"I fully support this responsible and careful handling of Corona," emphasizes Ullmann.

Vain hope for the BVV model

Until recently, the people of Domstadt had hoped that the German Volleyball Association (DVV), which is responsible for the regional leagues, would take over the modalities of the Bavarian Volleyball Association (BVV).

BVV had decided that there would be no relegation in its area and that teams could withdraw from the game without being downgraded a league.

The SC Freising asked the DVV in writing to adopt this regulation - ultimately in vain.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

"We are very disappointed with the way the DVV communicates," emphasizes Ullmann.

“It is true that in the professional field all games have to take place.

But we in the regional league are pure amateurs.

Those responsible at the DVV are obviously far away from the grassroots, otherwise they would have decided differently.”

Ullmann sees distortion of competition

The DVV has now decreed that all games and catch-up games must be played in its area with immediate effect.

In the event of a cancellation, a team would have to start again in the district league next season.

"We wanted to avoid that at all costs," explains Ullmann.

In addition, there was the problem that many players would not have had time on the scheduled catch-up dates for professional but also private reasons.

"Because the withdrawal is connected without fines, we decided in consultation with the team to deregister from the regional league.

Should the association change its regulations in the next few days, we would definitely claim a place in the regional league.”

Because for Ullmann it is already clear that the season can no longer be played out under fair conditions.

He knows from some teams that players are repeatedly absent due to Corona or have currently withdrawn from the sport altogether.

That is already distorting competition.

He is now preparing for the new season.

"I will have talks with all the players about how we want to proceed."
