Circle player Patrick Wiencek has ended his career in the German national handball team.
This was announced by the German Handball Association (DHB) in a statement.
Wiencek informed the national coach Alfred Gíslason of the decision in a personal conversation.
For years, Wiencek, who is called "Bam-Bam" by teammates and fans, was one of the pillars of the DHB selection.
The 33-year-old formed a world-class defense for his club, the German record champions THW Kiel, as well as for the national team together with Hendrik Pekeler.
"It's extremely unfortunate that Patrick Wiencek has decided to end his career in the national team," said Gíslason.
»But I accept this step and wish Patrick all the best for his further club career.«
Olympia 2016 as the crowning glory
»These were great, exciting years, which of course were crowned by the Olympic bronze medal in 2016.
But the special distinction of being able to lead the national team into my home arena as captain also remains,” said Wiencek.
"It was always an honor for me to play for Germany."
Wiencek completed 159 international matches for Germany and scored 316 goals.
His greatest successes were Olympic bronze in Rio 2016 and fourth place at the home World Cup in 2019. Wiencek missed the Olympic Games in Tokyo last year after breaking a fibula.
