Exclusive: 13 years after leaving Israel, Maya Arussi, the first Olympic fighter in Taekwondo - breaks the silence: "Right now I do not see myself living in Israel" • The full interview in the "Shishvat" supplement

Maya Arusi (39) is a pioneer in the taekwondo industry in Israel.

She put it on the Olympic map for the first time when she participated in the 2004 Athens Games, which opened the door for more athletes to dream big.

The bronze medal of Avishag Samberg in Tokyo 2020 is the best proof of that.

Thirteen years after breaking her foot and missing the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she opens her heart in an interview with Israel Today, telling why she packed her bags and moved her life to Los Angeles.

Do you miss the country?

"My parents and sister still live in Israel. We are in constant contact, and they come to visit me a lot, at least once or twice a year. I love the United States very much, the freedom that is here.

It's not boring here for a moment. "

Are you getting stronger?

"Right now I feel like keeping Shabbat is right for me. It's really fun for me and fills me up. I turn everything off and gather with myself, somewhere else. I still haven't gotten to ankle-length skirts and headgear properly."

Are you going back?

"I hope to visit very soon, when the corona calms down a bit. At the moment I do not see myself living in Israel, but maybe one day. I do not rule out. At the moment it is really good for me."
