From words to deeds.

On March 4, the Russian Football Federation (FUR) announced its intention to refer the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the sanctions taken by Fifa and UEFA against its national teams and its clubs at the international level.

It is now officially done.

With, in the background, the next World Cup in Qatar.

As a reminder, Russia, second in their group, were to face Poland at the end of March in the semi-final of the play-offs, before facing in the event of victory the winner of the Czech Republic - Sweden with, at stake, a ticket for the World Cup. end of the year (November 21 - December 18).

Arguing "the injustice of the situation", the Russian Federation wants all its national teams, men or women (who have a Euro this summer), to be reinstated in the competitions.

She regrets a unilateral decision taken by Fifa and UEFA under pressure from certain federations and without having had the opportunity to plead her case.

While waiting for the sports court to settle the merits of the dispute, the FUR asks it to suspend the execution of these decisions, that is to say to allow the Russians in particular to play this famous match against Poland at the end of March, which already announced that she would not participate…

For the time being, the court based in Lausanne will open “two separate procedures”, respectively targeting Fifa and UEFA by involving around fifteen national federations which openly refuse to face the Russians.

The CAS should communicate “in the coming days” more details on the timetable and the modalities of these appeals, as well as on their possible suspensive effects.

Since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the homeland of Vladimir Putin, host of the last World Cup in 2018, has been banned from world sport.

Athletes can still compete individually under a neutral banner and without an anthem, but clubs or selections have been excluded from the international concert.

Russia was thus deprived of the Paralympic Games currently being held in China.

The Russian Paralympic Committee had also decided initially to seize the CAS to challenge the exclusion of its athletes before retracting.

The regulations of the International Paralympic Committee indeed stipulate that it can “refuse the registration of any athlete, without giving any reason”.

Its charter also does not contain an arbitration clause that would allow a request to the CAS to resolve a dispute.
