The 2021/22 Bayernliga season ended in disappointment for the Erding Gladiators.

And for the 2022/23 season they have to look for a new coach.

Erding/Dorfen – The derby against ESC Dorfen was lost 1:5, and coach Thomas Vogl also announced at the end of the press conference that he would be leaving the Gladiators.

He is drawn from the Upper Bavarian ducal town of Erding to the Lower Bavarian ducal town of Landshut.

First, however, the derby was the focus.

"We would have imagined the end of the season differently," confessed Gladiators spokesman David Whitney before giving the floor to guest trainer Franz Steer.

He first went into his decimated squad and his "last resort".

He said to his team: "Guys, we can only win." The team learned from the games against Erding, "especially from the last one".

Had you conceded a few goals with a man down and a few goals conceded after counterattacks, this time the defensive game worked perfectly.

"We also had a very good goalkeeper performance," said Steer, almost understating it a little, because Luca Endres offered an outstanding game.

"We ended up playing old-style - simple hockey," said the ESC coach.

"And if you then show passion, then you can also be successful." Steer summarized: "Erding are a very good team, but if you don't let them play, then it will be difficult for them."

His opponent Thomas Vogl praised the ice pirates, "who played perfect Franz Steer ice hockey - closed the middle zone and didn't let my players develop".

You just lost a derby, "but in the end you played a great round - except for the last game, which is already over for me".

You have to accept defeats like that.

"I feel sorry for the viewers.

Of course we expected a win, but we didn't manage that because the opponent was in good shape and the goalkeeper saved well.” A big downer was Erik Modlmayr's shoulder injury, who had to be taken to the hospital.

Finally, Vogl said: "I have to apologize for the game today, we lost and Dorfen played it down confidently until the end." When asked why his team seemed very nervous and revealed inexplicable technical weaknesses, Vogl said: "Me I think that the steam was a bit out.” He already felt that on Sunday against Königsbrunn.

"It was just a long, tough season," he summarizes before announcing his departure.

The official part of the press conference was over, Dorfen's trainer Franz Steer had already been "fired", when Gladiators spokesman David Whitney asked for attention.

"It wasn't just the last game of the season, but also the last game of our coach Thomas 'Birdy' Vogl," he said.

The native of Landshut informed the club this week that he would be breaking up his tent in Erding.

He got an offer from his hometown club EV Landshut, "which I accepted after a long thought," explained Vogl, who found it difficult to find the right parting words.

"I'll go into the youngsters a bit," he said.

He will help DNL players to integrate into the first team, "and I will also be more involved in the first team".

He has the opportunity to learn a lot at EVL, "and I can also develop in other ways".

He has now been a Bayern league coach for eight years, "of which five have been wonderful years here in Erding".

He also decided to accept the EVL's offer "to get to know something different".

He added with a smile: "It doesn't have to be the last game for me here in Erding, who knows what will happen in one, two, three years." The aim is to learn from the A-Schein coaches in order to then in a few years to get the A license myself.

"I'm leaving with a heavy heart," said the 45-year-old, visibly moved.

"I said to the guys in the dressing room, this has become my second family here.

What we got through this year can only be found in families and in team sports.” It was “brutally difficult” for him to leave.

"But I have to take this chance and unfortunately have to leave Erding for the new season."

Vogl will say goodbye at the end-of-season party, "which will take place sometime in April," Whitney said.

But now you have to start looking for a new coach.
