New rules for awarding the Ballon d'Or will apply in the future.
The award has recently been criticized again and again.
Will Robert Lewandowski benefit?
Paris – The Ballon d'Or is still the most important individual award in world football - however, the award did not only get a few scratches in the German perception when Lionel Messi and not Robert Lewandowski won in 2021*.
Or even when the 2020 award was not given at all.
The host
France Football
is now taking the criticism to heart.
The football magazine announced four changes to make the award even fairer in the future.
The adjustments at a glance:
Ballon d'Or Amendment 1: Modified period
The award was originally intended to honor the best player in a calendar year.
So far nothing has changed - until now: From now on, the period from January to December will no longer be evaluated, but that of a complete season.
One point of criticism has always been that so far two half-seasons (sometimes accompanied by changes of club) have been counted.
Ballon d'Or Amendment 2: More expertise in preparing the nomination lists
So far, only journalists from
France Football
and
L'Equipe
have determined the 30 nominees for the Ballon d'Or in a list.
This compilation often caused discussions.
Real experts are now stepping up this process: in the future, an expert council led by Ballon d'Or ambassador Didier Drogba will be involved in drawing up the preliminary lists.
Ballon d'Or Amendment 3: Fewer countries allowed to vote
It was perhaps the biggest criticism of the Ballon d'Or: journalists from 170 countries were allowed to vote for the best footballer in the world.
It can be exaggerated as follows: A representative from the Turks and Caicos Islands had the same voting weight as a representative from Germany.
Sometimes journalists from exotic countries gave adventurous voices.
From now on, only the top 100 countries in the FIFA* world rankings are allowed to participate in order to strengthen specialist knowledge.

Ballon d'Or Amendment 4: Criteria are adjusted
France Football
adjusts the criteria for choosing the world player and the world player.
Individual performance remains the most important criterion, team performance also continues to play a role, as does the player's idea of fair play.
Dropping one point: the achievements of a player's entire career.
This aspect probably helped Lionel Messi* to win over Robert Lewandowski* last year.
Lewandowski is again delivering incredible numbers in all competitions this season, while Messi is not doing well in Paris.
With the new criteria, the Pole should be at the top of the next election - if he continues like this.
