WWK Volleys Herrsching is still missing a win over VfB Friedrichshafen to make it into the play-off semifinals.

The Hauser crew won the first game 3:2.

Herrsching – It was one of those magical Saturday evenings again.

In a gripping duel, WWK Volleys Herrsching defeated VfB Friedrichshafen in the first game of the play-off quarterfinal series 3:2 (17:25, 31:29, 24:26, 25:19, 15:10).

On Friday, the volleyball Bundesliga club from Ammersee has the chance to move into the semi-finals of the championship by winning the second game.

Almost businesslike, coach Max Hauser rated the surprising success soberly: "It was a game to my liking." Ferdinand Tille added: "We came into the game because of the emotions." , the volleyball players remained completely professionals.

It seemed as if they weren't quite aware that they had just beaten the reigning German Cup winners.

VfB: Mark Lebedew folds his team together after bankruptcy

On the other side of the net, Mark Lebedev neatly folded his team.

“We started well and did what we set out to do.

Then we took our foot off the accelerator and was painfully reminded that other teams can also play volleyball,” the VfB coach summed up.

The southern derby offered everything a volleyball game needs: excitement, spectacular rallies, lots of emotions and five sets.

The only sobering thing was the viewership.

Just 250 visitors were in the Ratiopharm Arena in Neu-Ulm.

At full capacity, up to 6500 spectators would fit in.

And those present grew quieter as the game drew to a close.

Only the almost 20 battle strollers from Ammersee, who celebrated their team, could be heard.

Spoiled for choice?

Hauser and Herrsching change early - and successfully

When selecting personnel, Hauser's decisions once again confirmed the much-cited agony of choice.

Philipp Schumann started on the diagonal, Jori Mantha and Jordi Ramon on the outside.

However, the coach had to correct himself early on.

The Spaniard didn't have a particularly good day and was replaced by captain Tim Peter at the end of the first set.

Things weren't going well for Schumann either.

From the second sentence Jonas Kaminski took over for him.

The game was like a roller coaster ride of emotions.

The hosts got off to a better start in the first set, Herrsching was visibly impressed.

The early deficit was followed for the entire set.

In the second round it went on like this.

Also because Herrsching – once again – weakened on the service line.

Skirmishes between Dorde Ilic and Lucas van Berkel trigger pack formation

But the substitutes Kaminski and Peter did the game good.

Again and again the captain showed his biceps after a successful action.

Tille shone as an emotional leader.

The WWK Volleys more and more freed themselves from their lethargy and swung to a true comeback.

"Also because we got rid of our nervousness," as Hauser said.

With a spotless ace, Dorde Ilic won the set.

The third round, which the Häfler clawed, was similarly tight.

It got heated in the middle of the sentence.

Ilic picked off an attack from VfB middle blocker Lucas van Berkel and gave his opponent an ice-cold look.

Seconds later, Herrsching's Serb (2.08 meters) and the Canadian in the service of VfB (2.10) were nose to nose at the net, and a small pack developed, which is rather unusual in volleyball.

After a few seconds, however, tempers calmed down again.

WWK Volleys Herrsching turn the game around with outstanding Jori Mantha

The guests still believed in the surprise.

VfB, who were missing player Dejan Vincic due to injury, eased up.

Herrsching improved, was much more present on the serve and especially in the acceptance and as a result almost had an easy time in attack.

Again and again the WWK volleys cleverly hit the high Häfler block.

After winning the fourth set, the Ammersee team had the momentum on their side and couldn't snatch victory from them.

A serve error by Lucian Vincentin sealed the win after 137 minutes.

Mantha was the outstanding attacking player on the WWK Volleys side.

The Canadian scored 23 attack points (51 percent) and earned the gold MVP medal.

Kaminski (16 points), Peter (14) and Ilic (11) also scored double digits.

Mantha was also convincing in acceptance (67 percent).

Luke Herr also delivered a very solid performance.

The Canadian setter scored six attack points himself and served all of his attackers in an exemplary manner.

Volleyball Bundesliga: Historic chance for Herrsching in the Audi Dome

The second leg will take place next Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Munich's Audi Dome.

Then the Herrschingers have the historic chance to make it into the play-off semi-finals.

Friedrichshafen is still the favorite.

Hauser: "They have the more experienced players." But that doesn't always mean something, as you saw on Saturday.
