The government body takes a new step almost a year after announcing that it would promote the change in the competition

The Board of Directors of the Higher Sports Council (CSD) has unanimously approved this Monday the statutes that will allow the definitive start-up of the first women's professional soccer league in Spain, after a meeting held with the presence of the president of the organization and representatives of all parties involved.

The approval comes almost a year after Irene Lozano, then Secretary of State for Sports and head of the CSD, announced on March 25 that the Council would promote the professionalization of national women's soccer.

It was on June 15 when the CSD approved this professional league, starting a process that slowed down until this Monday, when the body's Board of Directors unanimously approved those statutes that will govern the new entity for the women's soccer league.

After the meeting and during an act to make visible and formalize the birth of the professional league, Franco described the approval of the statutes as an "extremely relevant milestone".

“I don't know if it's a historic day, but it is very important for all women's sports in our country.

We are ready to say that we are going to make history.

A true country project is crystallized with this approval”, he insisted.

“Today I can finally verbalize from the utmost gratitude to all the agents involved that the women's professional soccer league is a reality.

Spain settles a debt with its female athletes, to whom we owed this recognition.

It was a fair claim, and it will raise even more the magnificent level that women's sport has in this country”, Franco asserted.

The president of the CSD highlighted the "effort of all the parties involved", despite the "difficulties, differences and ups and downs".

“There have been three quarters of negotiations and dialogue, an intense dialogue, but all parties have to give in.

I want to thank the players and clubs for their understanding of the CSD.

I have not hesitated because it was a commitment of the Government, which was decided.

My commitment was always firm and determined”, he stressed.
