Six weeks after leaving Ajax Amsterdam for inappropriate behavior towards employees, Marc Overmars has a new job.
The former sports director of the leaders of the Dutch football championship takes over the same position at the Belgian club Royal Antwerpen.
"I want to leave the Ajax side behind me and start a new chapter here," said the former international on Monday at his presentation.
“My departure from Ajax was very unfortunate.
I have to get through this and move on.
I will do that now.«
Overmars resigned as sporting director at Ajax in early February after it was revealed that he had sent messages to staff at the club that "had crossed the line," as the club put it.
Overmars had reportedly harassed the women with so-called “dick pics”, among other things.
"Especially for someone in my position, this behavior is unacceptable," Overmars had admitted.
"That won't happen again," he now promised in Antwerp.
In Amsterdam, the 48-year-old was considered the architect of the upswing.
Now Overmars is supposed to bring out the third place in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.
»The Gheysens family convinced me of the project.
The ambitions are huge.
It's a new time and a new chapter for me," said the Dutchman.
Real estate and building contractor Paul Gheysens is president of the association.
The oldest Belgian football club had no qualms about signing Overmars.
"It's important to give people new opportunities and to turn the page," explained general manager Sven Jaecques.
