Shock in the world of tennis: At 25, two months after winning the Australian Championship and being ranked first in the world, Ashley Barty has announced her retirement from the game.
Barty will become the second-ranked No. 1 to announce her retirement after Justin Henin did so in 2008 at the age of 25 as well.
The 25-year-old Barty, who has won a total of three Grand Slam titles in the last three years, uploaded a video to Instagram where she explained why she chose to retire from the round.
"This is a day full of emotions for me, where I announce my retirement from the game I love so much," Barty said. "From yourself, but I felt I had nothing to give. I do not have this urge. This is my success, I am ready for the next stage in life."
"I've given absolutely everything I have to this beautiful sport of tennis, and I'm really happy with that. For me, that is my success."
