Australian world number one Ashleigh Barty decided to abruptly retire from tennis at the age of 25, claiming that she had achieved her goals in the game and was feeling tired from the conditions of participating in tournaments.
Barty's retirement comes after winning 15 titles and less than two months after winning her third Australian Open title after winning Wimbledon 2021 and French Open 2019.
Barty spent a total of 121 weeks at the top of the rankings.
This is the second retirement for Barty, as she moved away from the game at the end of 2014 due to her annoyance about competing in tournaments, but she returned in 2016 and quickly advanced in the list of seedlings.
"I'll never stop loving tennis, it's a big part of my life, but I think it's important to enjoy the next part of my life that's about the human Ashleigh Barty, not the athletic Ashleigh Barty," Barty said in a video on her Instagram account.
