“Finding my old life”: nine months after his heart attack, Eriksen will play again with Denmark

The midfielder, who now lives with an internal defibrillator, will play again for the first time with the selection in the friendly match

Playmaker Christian Eriksen said he was "very happy" to find the Danish selection on Thursday, nine months after his cardiac arrest in the middle of Euros which required the implantation of an internal defibrillator.

Eriksen was called up last week for friendlies against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on Saturday and against Serbia in Copenhagen on Tuesday.

“I am very happy and happy to be back in the selection.

It's been a long time, so I'm happy to be back," Eriksen told reporters in Marbella, southern Spain, where the Danish team trains.

The 30-year-old Dane has been living with an internal defibrillator since his heart attack on June 12 against Finland at the Euro.

He remained motionless on the lawn for long minutes under the dumbfounded eyes of his teammates, the stadium and millions of viewers, before finally coming to after an emergency rescue.

“A strong feeling”

“I was lucky with the doctors and the diagnosis.

Everything is good to play again and it motivates me even more to get back to my old life, ”added the player who plays for a club in Brentford in the Premier League.

"I wouldn't have shown up here if I hadn't known if I was able to come back without anything bad happening to me," he said.

For Danish coach Kasper Hjulmand, "it's a strong feeling, we are very happy to have him here".

“It was a great moment when he joined the group yesterday,” added the technician on Thursday.

Eriksen (109 caps, 36 goals) finds a Danish team which had shone at the Euro (elimination in the semi-finals) and brilliantly qualified for the World Cup-2022 in Qatar at the end of the year.

Kasper Hjulmand said on Wednesday that "the most likely is that (Eriksen) will start as a substitute against the Netherlands, and then we'll see how it goes in Amsterdam.

But he will be 100% available to go home” against Serbia.
