With just 25 thousandths of a second, Checo Pérez has achieved
pole position
in Formula 1 after eleven years.
The Mexican promoted his Red Bull to keep one of the best classification in his history and for any other driver in his country.
He has achieved it in this change of era that has completely shaken the grid.
He will be accompanied in the front row by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr.
Sergio Pérez began his story in the fastest cars in the world in 2011. For more than a decade he had to look askance at all his colleagues to succeed on qualifying Saturdays.
This Saturday, March 26, on a circuit as dangerous as the one in Jeddah, he managed to set a time of 1:28.200.
It is also historic because it was the outline of the decline of Mercedes this season when Lewis Hamilton failed to qualify in Q1, the first round, and will start from sixteenth position.
Max Verstappen, the current champion, had a bad lap and finished fourth.
“What a lap, amazing!
I could do 1,000 laps and I don't think I could beat this one.
We didn't expect to beat the Ferraris in qualifying because we were focused on the race,” said Pérez, 32, after finishing the race.
In the season debut, in Bahrain, the Mexican was about to get on the podium but on the last lap the fuel system failed in the car and deprived him of being third.
Pole position
in Saudi
Arabia is sweet revenge against fate.
“I am very satisfied with Czech.
He has worked like never before.
I'm happy for him, I think this year's car suits him better because of his driving style," said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.
The successes have come late to the Mexican.
In 2020 he scored his first race victory at Sakhir when, after all the chaos, he emerged from last place to triumph.
In 2021, in Baku, he took advantage of a Verstappen puncture and a mistake by Hamilton to score his second victory.
