Lithuanian Olympic champion Dana Godzynwiczit has donated her gold medal from the 2000 Sydney Olympics to the "Strong Together" organization, which aims to help Ukrainian refugees who have fled the Russian invasion of their country.

The former athlete, now 56, is the current president of the Lithuanian Olympic Committee, vice-president of the European Olympic Committees and a member of the International Olympic Committee.

Godzinovichit became the first Lithuanian to win a gold medal at the Olympics since the country's independence from the Soviet Union, after winning a pottery shooting competition.

She also won gold at the 1989 Montecatini Terme World Championships, and twice gold at the 1988 Istanbul European Championships. In total, she participated in five editions of the Games - Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

"Sports and the Olympics symbolize world peace and unity," she said, "We wholeheartedly support the Ukrainian people, their athletes and the entire Olympic community. We contribute to a joint effort in every way possible."
