First publication: Ukrainian medalist will represent Israel in wrestling Israel today

Natalia Shapir received all the necessary approvals and will participate in the European Championships this week • She told Israel Today: "I am very excited. I continue wrestling because my big dream is to get to the Olympics and I do everything to make it happen."


After receiving the required approvals, Ukrainian wrestler Natalia Shapir will start representing Israel and will already this week participate in the European Senior Championships to be held in Budapest, Hungary. 

Shafir, 27, who visited Israel four years ago and at that time knew her husband David, is still waiting to receive citizenship, but only holds temporary residency.

This is an athlete with impressive achievements in the wrestling industry when she wore the uniform in yellow-blue in many national and international competitions, when she was part of the women's team. 

She currently lives in Holon, and trains with Sergio Simonian at "Atzma" Bat Yam and even recently won the Israeli championship.

Ilana Kartish is the one who helps her to adapt and even trained with her in the Ukraine. 

Among her notable achievements, one can find several wins at the Ukrainian Championships of various ages, winning the silver medal at the World Cadet Championships, the European runner-up for girls and also winning many tournaments in the round, competing in the weight category up to 62 kg.

"I hope to get citizenship to represent Israel at the Olympics," Shapir told Israel Today.

"This is the first competition that I represent Israel and I am very excited. I continue wrestling because my big dream is to get to the Olympics and I do everything to make it happen." 

Meanwhile, Shafir was in a training camp in Kiev and came to her family in Lvov a few days before the war began, when the war started, she fled with her family to Poland "We barely managed to cross the border, we were on the road for hours and a few days in Warsaw. Now together. " 

The wrestling association stated: "Based on its achievements and the opinions of its coaches in Israel, we in the wrestling association consider it a worthy candidate to represent the State of Israel and participate in the upcoming European and world championships as we expect it to be a candidate for high achievements."
