In 2014 he won gold for Germany in team jumping and won the overall World Cup in 2015: Ski jumper Severin Freund retires at the age of 33.

Munich - An Olympic champion surprisingly says goodbye: Severin Freund, gold medalist from Sochi 2014 and overall World Cup winner of the 2014/15 season, has ended his career.

The most successful DSV eagle of the past 20 years announced this decision on Sunday at the World Cup finals in Planica.

He can look back on a career with many highlights: In addition to Olympic gold with the German team in Sochi in 2014, four world championship titles, winning the overall World Cup and 22 World Cup victories were the highlights of the 33-year-old's long career.

Severin Freund

Birthday: May 11, 1988 (Age: 33 years old)

Height: 185cm

Weight: 67kg

Greatest successes: Olympic gold with the German team in 2014, overall World Cup winner 2014/2015, 4x World Cup gold, 2x World Cup silver, 2x World Cup bronze, 9 German championships, 22 World Cup victories

A week earlier, Freund's longtime companion Richard Freitag (30) had resigned.

Freund is now following suit: "In the last few weeks it has become clear to me that my time as an active athlete is coming to an end," said the Lower Bavarian: "I had really good years and was able to gain a lot of valuable experience.

After my comeback with the great successes of the last two years, I am at peace with myself and can close this chapter in my life the way I imagined it would.”

Injuries shaped his career as well as highlights.

After two cruciate ligament tears in 2017 and another meniscus surgery in early 2018, Freund fought his way back into the German World Cup team.

Although he did not regain his old strength afterwards, he still celebrated late successes: In 2021 Freund became team world champion in Oberstdorf, two weeks ago he won silver with the German team at the ski flying world championships in Vikersund.

He did not qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing.

At that time he won gold on the large hill and with the mixed team at the World Championships in Falun, Sweden, and finally won the overall World Cup in a memorable final as the last German to date, ahead of Slovenian Peter Prevc, who tied for the same number of points.

Only the Four Hills Tournament victory was never granted to him.
