Josef Held led the SpVgg Moosburg youth team to the highest league in 1969 as a coach.

On March 11, he closed his eyes forever.

Moosburg

- "He was a doer and a tinkerer," say his friends and long-time companions.

But now they can no longer talk to him about sport and especially football, which has accompanied him throughout his life.

On March 11, Josef Held's heart stopped beating.

Yesterday he would have been 88 years old.

Growing up on Steinbockstrasse in Moosburg, he always had a friendly relationship with the former director of the Moosburger Zeitung, Walter Beer (died 2006).

And he knew how to use his friend's technical knowledge when, for example, a desk drawer was loose again - or whatever.

Because when it came to the material "wood", Sepp Held could do almost anything.

He also had exceptional talent when it came to building or constructing Christmas cribs – you were at the right place with him.

Somewhere in his field he was a jack of all trades.

Josef Held was a real jack of all trades

He had acquired this knowledge and ability after leaving school at the Goldbrunner carpentry workshop, where he obtained his apprenticeship certificate in 1951.

And there he also met his Gertrude, who had been employed by the Goldbrunners as a housekeeper.

The wedding was celebrated in June 1958, and in September of the same year their daughter Renate was born.

Two sons, Josef "Beppo", married to Judith, and Herbert "Hias", married to Monika, were born in 1963 and 1964.

The Moosburg church towers in the background - that was also the trademark for the photos when the SpVgg football youth in 1968/69 was promoted to the top division, the Oberbayernliga, where they then belonged to the 14 best teams in this age group.

The picture shows (front, from left) Hans Mayr, Reinhard Neissendorfer, Ludwig Kerscher, Peter Bröckl, Franz Elfinger and Alois Steindl and behind them (from left) youth leader Horst Siegmund (died 2015), goalkeeper Martin Herzer, Fritz Korbmann, Franz Taubenthaler, Thomas Beisl , Reinhard "Blacky" Plank, Karlheinz Lehner and Werner Zimmer, Karl "Charly" Bichlmeier, Alois Bichlmeier and coach Sepp Held.

In addition to all of the relatives and many friends, the granddaughters and grandchildren in particular mourn Sepp Held – such as Sophia, Kai, Jakob, Paul and Leonhard.

With great sympathy, Held made his way to his final resting place last Saturday at the Moosburg Cemetery.

And many will remember the sociable person who liked to gamble (whether Watten or Schafkopf), he was always up for it.

But he also loved to garden or to ride his bike, that was a matter of sporting honor for him.

Great achievements over the years

However, football was his life.

In 2020, as a FT reader, it was still very important to him that the most successful SpVgg A-Juniors team 50 years ago, which he had coached, was made public.

The players from that time were very close to him to the end: Some of them played at a higher level, such as goalkeeper Martin Herzer (TSV 1860 Munich), Paul Huber from SV Langenbach (FC Bayern Munich) and Werner Zimmer (Wacker Munich).

Others found accommodation at the "Spiele" in Landshut.

He also remained unforgotten by those whom he “brought from abroad” so that they could be active at SpVgg Moosburg.

This also applies to all the alumni who may not have achieved the higher initiation, but who, with their coach Sepp Held, managed to get promoted to the next higher football league (even if only in the lower league).

Whether it was with SV Langenbach (1962) or TSV Wartenberg (1986).

He was also a coach at FVgg Gammelsdorf and FC Ergolding, and he also looked after the district teams at the time.

His heart beat for football - but he was inclined to many activities.

For example, petanque, a sport that was easy to get to in Bonau, the center of his life, and which he enjoyed because he was really active.

"Staying on the ball somehow" was always important for Sepp.
