An official wreath-laying ceremony was held this morning (Tuesday) at the National Holocaust Memorial in Athens commemorating the tens of thousands of Greek Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust.
The event was held as part of the "One Group - One People" project led by the Center for Jewish Impact, the Department of Israel and the Holocaust Memorial at the World Zionist Organization and the Maccabi Tel Aviv Basketball Club.
All the factors that work together to strengthen the connection between Israel and the Jewish communities in Europe, and to promote sports values as a tool to combat hatred and anti-Semitism, through Maccabi Tel Aviv's games in the Euroleague.
The ceremony was preceded by a meeting and discussion at the American High School in Greece, on the subject of sports and anti-Semitism in the modern age, in which more than 100 Greek youths between the ages of 15 and 17, Jews and Christians, participated.
During the event, a panel was held in which the chairman of the Center for Jewish Impact, Robert Singer, the CEO of Maccabi Tel Aviv, Adali Marcus, the CEO of the Jewish Community in Athens, Tali Meir, MK Simon Davidson, basketball legend Ulsie Perry, former star And today, Maccabi Tel Aviv's VP of Marketing and Sales, Doron Jamchi, Sarit Handknopf, director of the Israel and Holocaust Remembrance Department at the World Zionist Organization, and other dignitaries.
Chairman of Maccabi Tel Aviv Shimon Mizrahi said: "The Greek Jewish community is one of the oldest communities in the world. When we commemorate the Holocaust of the Greek Jews, we will of course remember the Jews of the Thessaloniki community, which was the largest Jewish community in Greece.
"Many of its surviving sons immigrated to Israel and settled in the old commercial center of Tel Aviv and were the city's first port workers.
We stand here to remember and not to forget, as we did recently in Milan, Berlin and Belgrade. "
