Shamna International Athletics Championships kicked off on Tishreen Stadium in Damascus today, with the participation of Lebanon, Iraq, Palestine and Kuwait, in addition to Syria.

The results of the first day resulted in the Lebanese player Maria Bishara winning the first place in the 100-meter race, followed by the Syrian players Heba Abdullah and Munira Hammoud, while the Iraqi Haider Thaer won the male category of the same race, and our player Alaa Al-Din Al-Hindi came in second place, then the Iraqi Muhammad Maytham Thamer.

In the 1000-meter race for females, our player Julie Fayyad came first, followed by her colleague Shahd Othman, then the Iraqi Dumo` Al-Ghanim, while our player Khaled Mustafa came first for the same category for males, leaving the second place for the Lebanese Muhammad Jawad Shamas and the Iraqi Khaled Abdul Rahman.

As for the javelin throwing competition, our player Bayan Derbas took the lead, followed by the Lebanese Lucy Antoine, and our player Rama Ibrahim.

The head of the tournament’s organizing committee, Major General Mohsen Abbas, pointed out, in a statement to SANA, the importance of the tournament in developing the technical level of our players, as it provides opportunities for friction with their peers from the participating countries, pointing to the efforts made to make the first edition a success, which brought the atmosphere of Arab competitions back to Syria.

The head of the Athletics Federation, Fayyad Bakour, pointed out that the Shamna International Championship was launched from Syria in its first version, in coordination with the Asian Athletics Federation, and it is a good start to organize the same tournament under the same name in several Arab countries later, explaining that Syria’s participation in the championship was with elite players among the 13 competitions that will be held over two days.

A number of representatives of the participating teams and players expressed their happiness with this participation and their keenness to prepare well for the competition for the first places in all competitions, pointing to the importance of the tournaments held by Syria because they are held according to the distinguished organizational and technical levels.

Tomorrow, the championship competitions will conclude with high jump, discus, 100-meter hurdles, 2 km running, walking and 400 meters.
