The end of her career is anything but imagined: The Italian skier Francesca Marsaglia fell badly in the very last race.

Munich – It's a bitter end.

The winter athlete Francesca Marsaglia officially announced the end of her career at the beginning of March because her body was no longer able to play along and could no longer reach a top level.

And then this: a fall in the very last race left behind a souvenir she probably wouldn't have liked.

Facial scrapes and a leg cast.

But the Italian can smile again.

Her statement about the pictures (swipe to the right/press white arrow) also begins very humorously: "There are those who need a make-up artist for a perfect eye and those who fall on their very last descent".

The career ends with "a bang," writes Marsaglia.

And the fall at the Italian championships could have been far worse, but she owes that to her skill: "Artistic gymnastics and yoga ensure that I 'only' suffered a complicated fracture".

End of skiing career different than expected, but "she would do it again"

Marsaglia is 32 years old and announced the end of her career on March 5th.

.

She would have liked "to win a title at home", but nothing came of it.

Why did she still compete in the Italian championships despite her firm decision?

"It seemed like the right decision to me.

I've always loved the championships.

I would do it again," Marsaglia writes with a heart.

She thanks the fans for the many messages and is already looking forward to the weekend.

Whether she can dance like the two attached dance emojis is unlikely.

The Italians are tough though, as Marsaglia's team-mate Sofia Goggia proved at the Olympics, taking silver 23 days after a serious injury.

Marsaglia made her World Cup debut in 2008. She was on the podium once in downhill and had many top 10 finishes.

She took part in the Olympic Games in Sochi 2014.

Untypically for a winter sports enthusiast, she grew up in Rome, not anywhere near the Alps.

Now she can first concentrate on her rehab and then perhaps fulfill her wishes, which according to her own statement are to become a trainer and a mother.

German athletes also ended their careers this winter, such as Maren Hammerschmidt, Erik Lesser or Severin Freund.
