World Cup 2022: the opponents of the Blues in brief

2022-04-01T18:01:39.558Z

At the end of the draw, the France team knows two of its three opponents in the first round of the World Cup in Qatar.

Denmark, an old acquaintance

Often spared by the draw during the last editions of the World Cup - which did not prevent them from sometimes tripping over the carpet from the group stage (2002, 2010) -, the Blues have, again once, were rather spared as they avoided the hat 2 bugbear that was Germany.

But it will still be necessary to be wary of Denmark, semi-finalist of the last Euro and 11th in the FIFA rankings.

An opponent that France knows well for having already met him three times in the World Cup, the last of which was on the road to the coronation in 2018.

In a match without much at stake in Moscow - they had already qualified for the round of 16 and the Danes only needed a draw to pass - the future world champions had been neutralized (0-0).

Note that the two teams will meet twice before the World Cup as part of the League of Nations, on June 3 in Saint-Denis, then on September 25 in Copenhagen.

Victim of a cardiac arrest in the middle of a match during the Euro, star Christian Eriksen has already returned to the field and could therefore find himself facing the Blues during these two rehearsal matches then during the shock in Qatar on November 26. at Lusail.

Tunisians hard to pin down

In hat 3, the Blues could have drawn the Senegalese African champion, Robert Lewandowski's Poland or Serbia.

Finally, it is Tunisia that will stand in their way, a team that France has only met four times so far, always in friendly, with two wins and two draws on the clock.

The last Franco-Tunisian confrontation dates back to 2010, in Radès (1-1), with an equalizing goal by William Gallas.

It remains to be seen what to expect from these Eagles of Carthage, led by Stéphanois Whabi Khazri and ex-Montpelliérain Ellyes Skhiri.

The men of Jalel Kadri, 35th in the Fifa rankings and qualified for their sixth World Cup - Tunisia has never left the pools at the World Cup - at the expense of Mali in the play-offs (1-0, 0-0), remain on an elimination without glory against Burkina Faso in the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations (0-1).

Leaving the track which had cost coach Mondher Kebaier his place.

Note that the Blues could no longer draw Serbia or Poland from the moment they had inherited Denmark in hat 2. We cannot indeed find more than two European nations in the same pool.

A 2018 remake or a premiere

We will have to wait a little longer to know the opponent against whom the Blues will start their World Cup, on November 22 in al-Rayyan, since it will be the winner of one of the three play-offs remaining to be played.

The world champions will face Australia (42nd in the Fifa ranking), the United Arab Emirates (68th) or Peru (22nd).

The first two will play a play-off semi-final on June 7 in Doha.

The winner will then play the ticket for the World Cup against Peru (June 13 or 14), a team that France had already met in the group stage in 2018. In Yekaterinburg, they won 1-0 thanks to the first goal of Kylian Mbappé in the World Cup.

Australia was also on the menu of the Blues, opening four years ago, for a tricolor victory in pain (2-1).

In contrast,

France has never played a single match against the United Arab Emirates.

A team looking for its second participation in the World Cup after 1990.
