The race for number one in the tennis world rankings is more open than ever: Russian Daniil Medvedev, currently number two behind Novak Djokovic, has to take a break due to a hernia.
"In the last few months I've been playing with a hernia," wrote Medvedev on Twitter: "Together with my team, I've now decided to have the problem fixed with a small operation."
French Open participation questionable
It is at least questionable whether Medvedev will be fit for the French Open (May 22 to June 5).
He is expected to take a "one to two month" break and will work hard to return to the pitch "as soon as possible".
Medvedev replaced Djokovic as number one in the world tennis rankings after 361 weeks in February, but had to give the top position back to the Serbs three weeks later after failing in the third round of the Indian Wells ATP tournament.
