After the critical loss to New Orleans its direct rival to the battle for the playoffs, the Lakers had to win that game to narrow the gap from tenth-place San Antonio.
But before the game the team was informed that LeBron James could not play due to and without knee pain, all the burden fell on Anthony Davis.
LA's wonderful chin did its thing, but on the other hand there was an equally large chin called Nikola Jokic.
Last season's MVP led the Nuggets to victory with another wonderful game of 38 points, 18 rebounds and 6 assists.
Jukic was also the one in the 116: 122 situation, took an offensive rebound and scored and then closed out interest from the line after a three-pointer by Carmelo Anthony.
The Lakers are currently one game behind San Antonio, which is expected to increase it to two games after defeating Portland later.
This is when there are only four more games left in the regular season.
Davis finished the game with a stat line of 28 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 blocks.

Two of the league's big stars, Yannis Antokompo and Luka Doncic, met for a particularly intriguing game in the final straight of the regular season, with the Texas guest coming out with her hand on the top.
Three straight threes at the end of the first quarter set up the Bucks 25:33 after 12 minutes, but by the half the Mavericks had wiped out the entire gap and gone down to the break with an advantage.
Dallas led 87:90 early in the final quarter and then Doncic's teammates Reggie Bullock and Dorian Pini Smith enjoyed Slovenian assists and scored threes en route to a 93-101 lead.
Brock Lopez tried to get the host back in the game, but Dallas kept his cool and closed a story.
Doncic starred with 32 points, 15 assists and 8 rebounds, Antocompo scored 28 points and added 10 rebounds.
