Once the video referee saved, then the post, after all, even a careless pass was not penalized. Nevertheless, FC Bayern lost their first leg in the quarter-finals - and was still well served with a goal.

Ninth game, first defeat:

FC Bayern had a perfect group stage in the current Champions League season, neither of the two games were lost in the round of 16 – but now it has happened: Bayern lost 1-0 at FC Villarreal in the first leg of the quarter-finals (0:1).

Here is the match report.

Corona comeback:

Alphonso Davies, also known as “Phonzie” at Bayern, made his first game since December.

The full-back was out after a corona disease with a myocarditis.

Most recently, Davies played 4-0 in the Bundesliga against VfL Wolfsburg 110 days ago.

Cold shower:

Bayern boss Oliver Kahn had already let the DAZN commentators know in the run-up to the game that many would see Bayern as the favorite, but that the task would not be easy.

And that's how it was: Because the hosts took the lead.

Villarreal launched an attack from Davies' side, the cross was passed and Dutchman Arnaut Danjuma kept his foot in the middle – 1-0 (8th minute).

Goal of the month - or slipped cross?

With the supposed second Villarreal goal, there was not so sure whether Francis Coquelin had planned it that way when he shot the ball into the middle from the left without aiming at his target.

The ball flew over the surprised Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer and into the goal.

But the joy was short-lived: After consulting the video images, it was decided that Coquelin had been offside (41st).

Rescue efforts – first the post, then »Phonzie«:

Even after the change of sides, things didn’t go well for Bayern, first Thomas Müller stepped past the ball.

Then it became dangerous on the other side: First Gerard Moreno hammered the ball against the post (54'), then Davies prevented the second goal against Moreno with a magnificent slide (57').

No cross passes from the goalkeeper on his own... center circle!?!

Manuel Neuer's trips out of the penalty area (keyword Manu, the libero) are now hardly a surprise.

But when the keeper played a bad pass in the center circle, the Bayern players' hearts must have slipped into their pants.

Gerard Moreno intercepted the ball, but his long-range shot at the empty Bayern goal went wide (63').

In the past, people used to talk about Bayern being overwhelmed when Michael Ballack made it 1-0 again in the 89th minute – luck was on the other side that evening.

Usury – by Villarreal!

The opportunities mentioned were by no means the only ones that the hosts missed against Munich.

Alfonso Pedraza (69'), Danjuma (67') and Pedraza again (87') had the best chances to score, but none of them took advantage of them.

No wonder coach Unai Emery raged on the sidelines.

In the DAZN interview, coach Julian Nagelsmann then spoke of a “wild” game – and he was right.

Conclusion:

Munich were lucky that there was not a preliminary decision on the semi-finals that evening.

"If things went badly, it could have gone higher," said Thomas Müller self-critically.

Everything is still open before the second leg on April 12 (9 p.m.).

A look back at the round of 16 against RB Salzburg could encourage Bayern fans.

After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Munich won the second leg 7-1.
