Paris 2024 Olympics: the organizing committee wants to do without generators, which pollute too much

The organizing committee welcomes Enedis among its official supporters. Paris 2024 hopes to be able to connect all of its sites

Paris 2024 keeps repeating that it wishes, in line with the 2020 agenda of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), “to organize exemplary Games.

"We have climate objectives, by reducing carbon emissions by half compared to previous Games, objectives to reduce our impact on the environment and circular economy objectives by limiting as much as possible what we will use for organize these Games", summarizes Georgina Grénon.

According to the environmental excellence director at Paris 2024, “energy fits into all these areas.

We had to find solutions to deliver our commitment to 100% renewable electricity.

During the Olympic and Paralympic Games, 100% of the sites will be connected to the network.

A strategic choice, whereas, generally, the power supply for major events organized in France is provided by generators running on fossil fuels.

The Organizing Committee estimates that it will thus save the equivalent of 1,800 tonnes of CO2 equivalent compared to the use of generators, or 1,800 Paris-New York flights.

Paris 2024 wanted to work on an innovative solution.

"To meet this challenge, we looked with Enedis (

which became an official supporter of the Games

) how to connect all the sites with the network, in order to be able to supply renewable electrical energy by EDF", explains Frédéric Lebrun, Deputy Director energy in Paris 2024.

Electrical connections will remain after the Games

During the Games, two types of competition sites will be used: existing sites such as the Stade de France (athletics and rugby) or Paris-La Défense Arena (swimming) and temporary sites such as the ground of Essences (shooting) or Versailles ( horse riding).

“We need to secure the power supply to the sites (

the Games, in particular, means 100,000 hours of television broadcasting

), while respecting our low-carbon ambition contract.

All of this requires a network connection and network reliability,” continues Frédéric Lebrun.

For existing sites, Enedis is already working to identify weak supply points in order to secure them.

On the temporary sites, in particular the most iconic (Concorde, Invalides, Champ de Mars), where "the supply is currently not up to the challenges", the challenge is to set up electrical connections in order to connect these sites to the network.

"The partnership with Enedis consolidates all this work", summarizes Georgina Grénon.

In order to maximize what Paris 2024 calls “the legacy of the Games”, electrical connections will remain after the Games, allowing future events to take advantage of them.

For existing sites, discussions are underway with site owners.

“We studied each of the steps to do things differently”

The Stade de France will in particular undertake work to modify the power supply line, so that from now on the enclosure will be powered on the evenings of major events by the network and no longer by the generator which will become a ultimate backup solution.

“Other sites, especially those within the city of Paris, are thinking about it,” continues Frédéric Lebrun.

The principle of "zero generators and connection to the network" will also apply to the Olympic Village of Saint-Denis and could also be duplicated along the route of the flame.

"If we want to transform the Games, we must transform every step of our operations," said Georgina Grénon, environmental excellence director.

There is a traditional way of organizing major competitions, we have studied each of the stages to do it differently.

The subject of energy is to assume our share of responsibility but also to leave a legacy which, we hope, will make it possible to change the way of carrying out events.

Enedis, through this partnership, wishes to appear as a credible and reliable solution to replace generators with electrical energy.
