The Russian Volleyball Association (VFV) is demanding $ 80 million in compensation after it was denied the right to host the Men's Volleyball World Championships.
VFV secretary general Alexander Yarmanko told Russia's official state news agency TASS that the organization had appealed to the Sports Arbitration Court (CAS) in hopes of securing a huge refund for the loss of the International Volleyball Association's (FIVB) flagship event.
Russia was scheduled to host the Men's Volleyball World Championships between August 26 and September 11, with 10 cities including the capital Moscow selected to host games.
However, the FIVB announced last month that the event would no longer take place in Russia in response to the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
The World Governing Body for Volleyball concluded that "the World Cup in Russia could not be prepared and carried out" due to the war, and insisted that it was "very concerned about the escalation situation and the security of the people of Ukraine".
The VFV is demanding the return of the money it claims it would have received had the World Cup been held in Russia.
"The lawsuit is ready," Yarmanko told TASS.
Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Kazan, Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Ufa, Yekaterinburg, Yaroslavl and Belgrade have been selected to host games at the World Men's Volleyball Championships.
Russia has never hosted the event, but the Soviet Union did in 1952 and 1962.
