Marty had a chance to double with another penalty that was whistled to win for Bante in the 56th minute, but he missed.
In the 59th minute, Obmiang equalized, and four minutes later Federi made a comeback - 1: 2 to Barcelona.
But in the 83rd minute Merleau equalized for Levante to 2: 2 thanks to, of course, a third penalty that was whistled to the hosts' right in the game.
The finishing chord belonged to Luke de Jong who slammed in a goal in extra time and set up a big 2: 3 for Xavi's team.
Barcelona now have 60 points, just like Sevilla in third place, but with one game less.
The distance from the leading Real Madrid stands at 12 points.
