Update from April 10, 6:15 a.m.:

Good morning to all early risers!

After two years, another race in Australia is on the agenda today.

From 7 a.m. the tires are smoking at Melbourne's Albert Park Circuit.

First report from April 9th:

Melbourne – For two years, Formula 1 could not stop in Australia due to the pandemic, now the 20 drivers are starting again on the Melbourne race track.

While Charles Leclerc* drove to pole position in the Ferrari, Max Verstappen had to settle for second place.

After comparatively weak times in qualifying, the two German pilots had to line up at the bottom of the field.

It was only on the final lap that Ferrari driver Leclerc snatched pole from the defending Dutch champion, with the Monegasque setting the fastest time of 1:17.868 minutes.

After qualifying, Verstappen was annoyed about his second place on the grid, he "didn't feel comfortable in the car the whole weekend," said the 24-year-old.

Leclerc, on the other hand, will try to extend his current lead (45 points) in the overall standings.

The weakening Mercedes performance in the first two races of the season could also continue in Australia.

Record world champion Lewis Hamilton* starts from fifth place, his teammate George Russell landed directly behind him.

This prompted motorsport boss Toto Wolff to call off the title fight.

"In the end, we probably won't be able to fight for the World Championship title this season," said the Austrian.

In fact, it looks more like a title fight between Ferrari and Red Bull.

Formula 1: Australian Grand Prix live – Sebastian Vettel benefits from his colleague's crash

Aston Martin driver Sebastian Vettel, who had already struggled with an engine failure in practice*, continued to have bad luck in qualifying.

After an accident on his car, the man from Heppenheim was only able to drive one lap, as his team-mate Lance Stroll caused a time buffer after a crash with Nicholas Lafiti.

During this time, the mechanics repaired the damaged Hessian's racing car, which missed the jump into Q2*.

"It was a miracle we got out at all.

I wouldn't have made it without the red flag.

It's not an easy weekend," said Vettel.

The former world champion will start 17th despite being 18th as Alexander Albon was demoted following a penalty.

Compatriot Mick Schumacher* didn't have it easy either, but at least made it into Q2.

After all, the 23-year-old won the internal qualifying duel against his team-mate Kevin Magnussen, who starts one place behind him.

"We gave everything, we can be satisfied with that," Schumacher summed it up.
